Significant Changes to GCSE Examinations in the UAE
The UAE Ministry of Education has announced upcoming changes to the GCSE examination system for students in British schools, effective from 2025. These changes aim to raise educational standards and better prepare students for future academic and professional challenges.
Return to Traditional Exam Format
One of the key changes is the discontinuation of formula sheets in mathematics, physics, and combined science GCSE examinations. While students have been permitted to use formula sheets since 2022, from 2025 onwards, these subjects will revert to a traditional format requiring students to recall formulas from memory.
New Opportunities for Digital Examinations
Concurrently, Cambridge International has announced the launch of digital examinations for six subjects, starting from June 2026. The shift to digital examinations will enable more effective assessment of students' skills in using modern technologies and open up new avenues for personalized learning.
Consultations with Stakeholders
The Qualifications and Examinations Regulatory Authority is currently conducting extensive consultations with teachers, school leaders, students, examining boards, and other stakeholders to discuss the proposed changes and gather feedback. The consultation period will end on 17 October 2024.
