Planned Legislative Changes in the UAE
In 2025, the UAE will introduce several new laws and regulations, impacting various aspects of life, from transportation and to healthcare and business.
Transportation
From March 29, 2025, a new federal traffic law will come into effect in the UAE.
Key changes include:
- Lowering the minimum age for obtaining a driver’s license to 17 years
- Prohibiting pedestrians from crossing roads with high-speed traffic (over 80 km/h)
- Restricting the use of car horns to cases where it is necessary to prevent accidents
Penalties for traffic violations will become stricter, with severe infractions potentially leading to criminal charges.
Food Standards
Starting June 1, 2025, Abu Dhabi will implement mandatory Nutri-Mark labeling for food products, highlighting their nutritional value. Products without this labeling will be removed from store shelves. This initiative aims to combat obesity and promote healthier consumer choices.
Genetic Testing
From January 1, 2025, genetic testing will be mandatory for all UAE citizens planning to marry. This requirement is designed to detect hereditary conditions and improve the health and well-being of future generations.
Women's Representation in Business
As of 2025, private joint-stock companies in the UAE will be required to have at least one woman on their board of directors. This initiative seeks to enhance opportunities for women in the corporate sector.
In addition, private companies employing 20 to 49 people must hire at least two UAE nationals. Previously, this rule applied only to companies with 50 or more employees. Non-compliance will result in financial penalties.
