- Supermoon Over the UAE on October 17
Record-Breaking Supermoon to Illuminate the UAE Sky in October
Residents and visitors of the United Arab Emirates will have the chance to witness a rare astronomical event. On October 17, the largest and brightest supermoon of the year will rise in the UAE's night sky.
Known as the "Hunter’s Supermoon," this October event has historical significance. In the past, hunters relied on the bright full moon during autumn to help them track game, which gave the phenomenon its name.
During this supermoon, the Moon will reach its closest point to Earth in 2024, making it appear unusually large. The Earth's satellite will look 13.5% bigger and significantly brighter.
To mark this occasion, the Dubai Astronomy Group is hosting a special event at the University of Dubai. Attendees can enjoy fascinating lectures about the supermoon and observe it through powerful telescopes.
For those who prefer to stargaze independently, several prime locations across the UAE offer ideal views of the night sky. These include:
- Al Barsha Pond Park (open until 11:30 PM)
- Al Qudra Lakes (open 24/7)
- Hajar Mountains in Hatta
- Jebel Ali Beach and Kite Beach
- Dubai Creek observation deck (70 meters above the water)
- Al Quaa Milky Way Spot in Abu Dhabi (a remote area with minimal light pollution)
